Hi, Investor! 👋🏼

I’m Jimmy, and welcome back to another (quick) edition of Jimmy’s Journal.

Now that the dust has settled, I decided to take a deeper look at Meta Platforms’s recent acquisition of Manus AI.

The more I dug into the details, the more interesting the story became - both from a technology and an investment perspective. That’s why I decided to write this piece exclusively for premium subscribers. 🔒

This post may also mark the beginning of a slightly different format here at Jimmy’s Journal: shorter, faster and more focused analysis around important developments as they happen. Let me know in the comments what you think of this format.

Meta Acquires Manus:

Meta announced the acquisition of Manus for a reported price above $2 billion. In absolute terms, this is the third-largest acquisition in Meta’s history, behind only WhatsApp and Oculus VR - and, notably, larger than Instagram.

That ranking alone is revealing.

This was not a defensive move, nor a speculative bet.

It was a deliberate step toward a very specific goal: closing the gap between AI that reasons and AI that executes. In other words, moving beyond assistants that answer questions toward systems that get work done.

What is Manus:

Manus is a startup focused on general-purpose autonomous agents - AI systems designed to plan, decompose, and execute complex tasks end-to-end with minimal human supervision after the initial prompt.

The name itself reflects this ambition. Manus comes from the Latin expression “Mens et Manus” - mind and hands.

The idea is straightforward but powerful: combine reasoning and execution in a single system. Not just understanding what needs to be done, but actually doing it.

The company was founded by Xiao Hong (CEO) and Yichao “Peak” Ji (Chief Scientist).

It originated in China as a product inside Butterfly Effect (also known as Monica/monica.im), but in 2025 Manus relocated its headquarters to Singapore, aiming for a more neutral base to support global expansion and reduce geopolitical risk.

(The valuation exploded with this change, of course).

Following the acquisition, Meta confirmed the wind-down of remaining China-based operations, with no continuing Chinese ownership interests.
